Potential Additions to Jason Kidd’s Coaching Staff
The Mavericks will need to fill potentially 5 spots on the bench, find out who those names are.
Updated on June 22, 2025 for the departure of Sean Sweeney and the news of Jared Dudley’s contract not being renewed.
The Dallas Mavericks have gone through a lot of controversial and disappointing moments this season, most notably trading away Luka Doncic in February. While fans have been focused on the roster, General Manager Nico Harrison, and Owner Patrick Dumont, Jason Kidd’s coaching staff has shrunk compared to the beginning of the season.
Who’s Gone?
Marko Milič was the first assistant coach to leave the team shortly after the Luka Doncic trade. He had a close relationship with Doncic and wished not to finish the season.
Darrell Armstrong has served as an assistant coach since 2009, was placed on administrative leave pending a legal matter on February 16, 2025.
Alex Jensen accepted the Utah Utes head coaching job on March 6, 2025. Jensen will remain with the Mavericks for the rest of the season before starting his new head coaching position in Utah. He was known for his work with the big men and forwards, notably Dereck Lively.
On June 22, 2025, Lead assistant coach Sean Sweeney joined Mitch Johnson’s new coaching staff in San Antonio as his new associate head coach.
Also on June 22, 2025, Fred Katz reported the Mavericks will not renew contracts for mavericks assistants, including Jared Dudley.
Potential Additions
Frank Vogel
Vogel, who’s currently a coaching consultant on Jason Kidd’s staff, could be a strong candidate to become an assistant, replacing lead assistant Sean Sweeney per Michael Scotto. Vogel is a strong defensive mind who won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, with Jason Kidd as one of his top assistant coaches.
God Shammgod (Promotion)

God Shammgod, a fan and player favorite may be due for a promotion on Jason Kidd’s bench. He has served as a player development coach since 2019, notably working with the guards on the roster.
It’s unlikely he’ll be a front of the bench candidate, but with the loss of Marko Milič and potentially Darrell Armstrong, there’s an opportunity to earn a new title and he makes a strong case for a promotion.
Tyson Chandler (Promotion)

The Mavericks could consider promoting Tyson Chandler to a full time bench position after serving as a player development coach since 2021. Chandler notably has been working with the big men with the roster, along with Alex Jensen these past 2 seasons.
With Jensen accepting the Utah Utes head coaching position, promoting Chandler would be a in-house move and relatively, a notable one.
Joseph Blair
Alex Jensen and Darrell Armstrong were two defensive minded assistants and the Mavericks definitely can use someone to help assistant coach and defensive coordinator Sean Sweeney on the defensive end. Blair, who played professionally for 13 years at the power forward and center positions, standing at 6’10. He was Minnesota’s defensive coordinator in under Ryan Saunders and temporarily Chris Finch for the 2020-2021 season.
Blair is currently serving as the head coach of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the G-League Affiliate of the Houston Rockets and could return to a NBA bench if the opportunity comes along.
Jason Terry
Terry, who’s currently an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz was Kidd’s teammate and an instrumental piece during the Mavericks championship season in 2011.
Coach Terry could bring in the ongoing player development experience he’s gaining with Utah along with his previous coaching stints. Also with his knowledge on both sides of the ball, he could be a dual learning resource. Coach Terry knows the Dallas Mavericks culture, whatever’s left of it anyways.
Roy Rogers
Roy Rogers is currently an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers under Chauncey Billups. Rogers previously served as an assistant coach for Kidd for the Brooklyn Nets in 2013.
Rogers, played the power forward position, standing at 6’10. He also favors the defensive side of the ball, which is a good combination of who Dallas needs on their staff next season.
Rogers was not retained in Portland this past summer, this would make him a free agent, if there’s mutual interest this off-season.
It’ll be quite a while before we know who will be replacing the outgoing assistants and if there’s any other existing assistant coaches on staff who are reconsidering their future with the Mavericks.
What are your thoughts? Who would you like to see on the Mavericks sidelines next season?
